Objective
To create a highly efficient and innovative dual resin product that optimizes car assembly time, by developing a novel overmolding process and tool while making the largest electric front trunk on the market.
Part's and Mold's Specifications
- Part's material (Resin) : TPE & PP+40GF
- Part's wall thickness and weight : 3 mm / 4 490 g
- Injection press size : 2 000 T
- Mold's size and weight : 91” X 75” X 75” / 45 500 lbs
Challenges
- Design a product that would allow assembly on a car production line within a smaller opening than the actual product
- This, to optimize car assembly time and respect the initial goal of having the biggest electrical front trunk on the market
Solutions
- Design a successful a 2 resin (soft & hard shell) product with an innovative and novel process and tool to overmold a hard shell onto soft resin components
- Both the trunk design and the car have won esteem awards in 2020, such as the 2022 Motor Trend Car of the Year
